Product Creation & Quality: How Our Products are Made

Our Process Header

Here at Big Sky Botanicals, we are committed to offering only the absolute highest quality of hemp-derived CBD. We believe that transparency is the key to trust, which is why we share the entire process behind the creation of our product line. Follow along below, learning how our products move from seed to plant to end product:

Organic Hemp Farming

It all begins with a US-grown hemp that is low in THC designed specifically for producing CBD-rich extracts. This strain is organically grown in nutrient-rich soil without the use of pesticides.

The all-female hemp crop is harvested and the plants are dried and warehoused. We harvest and utilize the flowering tops of the hemp plant for a 'whole-plant' extract rich in phytocannabinoids and terpenes. Before extraction, the plant material is milled into a coarse powder for extraction. Each plant produces major and minor cannabinoids including but not limited to:

  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Cannabigerol (CBG)
  • Cannabinol (CBN)
  • Cannabichromene (CBC)
  • less than .3% THCA

The hemp that is used to create the products we sell at Big Sky Botanicals is grown under an industrial hemp license and in compliance with the 2018 Farm Bill. As a result, the products we sell are federally legal across all 50 states.

Crude Hemp Extraction & Post-Processing

After harvest, our hemp undergoes a proprietary extraction process that preserves the majority of the beneficial hemp-derived cannabinoids and terpenes while eliminating unwanted compounds. This extraction process begins with ethanol extraction to produce a crude extract rich in terpenes, CBD, and other minor cannabinoids.

The extract is finally heated through a process called decarboxylation. This transforms the acid-based cannabinoids into their final, active form. All of this processing takes place in our facility which is Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Compliant.

THC Removal via Chromatography

For our broad-spectrum offerings, we utilize a unique preparatory chromatography process. During this process, the extract is filtered using a unique media that selectively binds to the Delta 9-THC. As the extract is filtered, the THC alone is stripped and discarded, while the remaining cannabinoids and terpenes remain intact creating a broad-spectrum profile.

The absence of detectable THC is confirmed through High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) tests. Note: our full-spectrum products do not undergo this process.

Nanoemulsions: Effective, Water Soluble Products

Through further patent-pending processing, the extracts used in some of our products are further processed into nanoemulsions. This process breaks up the hemp oil droplets and emulsifies them to keep them stable in this state.

The result is a product that disperses throughout liquids and offers a higher bioavailability. These products require lower doses thanks to higher absorption into the bloodstream due to the larger surface area.

You'll find our nanoemulsified products marked water-soluble when browsing our selection. For a more in-depth explanation of nano emulsification, read our article on the topic.

Production of the Final Product

The resulting hemp extracts are then used to produce our line of cannabinoid and terpene-rich CBD oil products. Our product line includes softgels, tinctures, topicals, pet products, gummies, and more. Products are offered in full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, oil-based, and water-soluble varieties - all clearly marked as you shop.

To confirm that our processes are creating clean, potent, and effective products, each batch is lab tested. We share these lab reports publicly so you can verify the results for yourself. You'll find cannabinoid and terpene potency reports and contamination-free confirmations.

These certificates of analysis can be found in our lab reports section and are also linked from our product pages as you shop.
